Real Madrid go into the UEFA Super Cup tie against Manchester United in Macedonia with memories of having done that last year. Then, playing in Lerkendal Stadion, Trondheim, Norway, Real Madrid edged Sevilla 3-2 in extra time to lift the trophy. With nearly 18,000 in attendance, Sergio Ramos played a crucial role in helping Real Madrid through against his former club.
Marco Asensio gave Real Madrid the lead in the 21st minute before Franco Vazquez equalised matters for Sevilla in the 41st minute. The two teams headed down the tunnel with the scoreline reading 1-1.
Sevilla took the lead in the 72nd minute when Sergio Ramos was adjudged to have brought down Vitolo inside the penalty area. Yevhen Konoplyanka stepped up to the spot and made the most of the lottery ticket to beat Kiko Casilla in goal. But Ramos made amends, in typical Ramos fashion, with a stoppage time headed goal to make it 2-2 in the 93rd minute.
Sevilla were reduced to ten men after just four minutes into extra time when Timothée Kolodziejczak picked up a second booking. Ramos looked to have given Real Madrid the lead soon after but the goal was disallowed for a pull back on Adil Rami. However, the goal did come, the winner, deep into extra time with Dani Carvajal beating Sergio Rico in the Sevilla goal.
Statistically, Real Madrid were far superior with more shots and shots on target as compared to Sevilla.
