Real Madrid will again make a trip to Germany in the Champions League and this time it will be to a familiar (oh so familiar) destination in Bayern Munich. The first leg will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu on 23 April and return leg will be at the Allianz Arena on 29 April.
Real have played Bayern 20 times (all in the European Cup). Five of these have been in the semi-finals where Bayern has come out on top on four occasions – 1976, 1987, 2001 and 2012. Real has won only once (in 2000).
Speaking about the draw Emilio Butragueno said the fairly obvious. “A lot of confidence in the players but it will be extremely tough against Bayern. Of course I hope Real Madrid reach the final and win,” he said.
Carlo Ancelotti said: “If we want to win the UEFA Champions League, we have to beat everyone including Bayern. The semi-finals against Bayern will be very difficult but it’s not easy for anyone to play Real Madrid either.”
Paul Breitner, FC Bayern München head scout said: “Our team are in a very good situation. We are on course for another treble and to become the first team to defend the Champions League. I look forward to the encounter with Madrid.”
Philipp Lahm, Bayern’s captain said: “The top two teams will play each other. These games are worthy of being the final. You only have one goal when you are in the semi-final – to reach the final at all costs.”
In the other semi-final, Real’s cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid will entertain Chelsea. There the first leg is on 22 April in Madrid and 30 April in London.
