Nuri Sahin’s forgettable experience with Real Madrid and Liverpool has come to an end with the Turkish player re-joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on an eighteen month loan.
His 10m transfer arrival to Real Madrid was greeted with much expectation despite his injury issues. In 2011 he signed a six year contract with the club and made his debut against Osasuna where we ended up winning 7-1. In fact, in all the games Sahin played for us, we never lost.
However, despite his ten game spell, he was loaned off to Liverpool in the summer with Arsenal also showing much interest. The main reason is expected to be his lingering injuries added by much competition in midfield for playing role.
At Anfield, on a season long loan, he played twelve games but again he had little influence mostly due to his place on the pitch which wasn’t suitable to his style of play. This affected his performance and in the end, Liverpool opted to ship him back to Germany having used him for only half of the loan deal.
In the press conference it was revealed that it is a loan deal lasting eighteen months (ending 2014 summer) with an option to buy at the end.
Some bits from the press conference:
Borussia Dortmund chief-executive, Hans-Joachim Watzke: “Back then, we told Real that if it is possible to bring back Nuri, give us a sign.”
“We took Nuri for six months on loan and then a further twelve months. He has signed completely on the financial offers of Borussia Dortmund. Nuri offered the willingness to return.”
Michael Zorch (sporting director, Borussia Dortmund): “Nuri fits in our football system. He has recently had little match practice so we ask for moderate expectations”
Sahin: “I am really happy to be back home. Even the nurses at the hospital recognised me during the medical check-up.”
“I told him (Jurgen Klopp) that he is back with a secure penalty taker” (laughs)
“We only had 48 hours before getting the signal from Real Madrid that they wanted to talk to us about Nuri Sahin”
In an official statement, Liverpool FC said:
Liverpool Football Club have confirmed an agreement has been reached with Real Madrid allowing midfielder Nuri Sahin’s loan deal to end, so he can join another club with immediate effect.
Sahin arrived at Anfield for a season-long stay in August 2012, but will now spend the rest of the campaign with Borussia Dortmund, the side with whom he won the 2011 German championship.
The Real Madrid man made a total of 12 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals – including a match-winning brace against West Brom in the Capital One Cup.
Everybody at LFC would like to wish Nuri all the best for the future.
And, Real Madrid in an official statement said:
