French club AS Monaco have signed Ricardo Carvalho on a one year deal for the 2013-14 season on a free transfer. The Portuguese’s contract expires at the end of the season.

35 year old Ricardo Carvalho arrived three seasons ago and played 76 games for the club and scored three goals.

Carvalho initially signed a two year contract worth €7.9 million arriving from Chelsea to rejoin Jose Mourinho who had moved to Madrid. In his first season, he formed an integral defensive pairing with Pepe in the centre of defence.

In the next two years, his role with the club dropped as he saw his appearances drop. Ramos moved in the centre of defence along with Pepe and Albiol became third choice.

On signing for Monaco he said,

I am very happy to join AS Monaco and participate in this new adventure. This is a new challenge for me.
