Real Madrid players were involved in international matches with their respective national teams. Some played friendlies while some played World Cup qualifiers, some were with the first team while some with the youth national teams. Here is a roundup after the first match (there is a second match to go for most).
Brazil 2-2 Italy
With Brazil being the host nation for 2014 World Cup, they’ve been playing friendlies to stay in shape and working together. Kaka and Marcelo were called up for Brazil’s friendly against Italy in Geneva. Both came off the bench with Kaka playing 28 minutes and Marcelo playing 13 minutes.
Spain U21 5-2 Norway U21
Nacho was the only current Real Madrid player called up into the squad for Spain U21. He came on in the 54th minute as a substitute thereby playing 36 minutes. Two ex-canteranos – Rodrigo Moreno (now with Benfica) and Sergio Canales (now Valencia) scored for the Spaniards. With his goal, Rodrigo became the top goalscorer for Spain U21 with 13 goals. Pablo Sarabia, another ex-Canterano, (now with Getafe) played 24 minutes as a substitute.
Israel 3-3 Portugal
All three – Pepe, Fabio Coentrao and Cristiano Ronaldo started for Portugal in the day’s early kickoff in Israel and all three played the full ninety minutes in this battle. Portugal having gone 3-1 down managed to come back late on to grab one point. Cristiano set up Helder Postiga for Portugal’s second goal (video) while Fabio Coentrao scored a goal in injury time to keep Portugal’s desire to be in Brazil in 2014 on track. Somewhat. (Here is the video)
Croatia 2-0 Serbia
Luka Modric played the entire 90 minutes in Croatia’s 2-0 win versus Serbia.
Kazakhstan 0-3 Germany
Both Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira started for Germany despite the injury scare to Khedira in training two days before. Ozil continued his assisting prowess on the international stage as he assisted first for Bastian Schweinsteiger (video) and then the third for Thomas Muller (video). Khedira played a slight role in the second goal as well. He came off in the 82nd minute while Ozil played the entire game.
France 3-1 Georgia
Raphael Varane, deservedly, made his début for the French national team against Georgia with the French winning 3-1. Both Varane and Benzema started for Les Bleus and played full 90 minutes. Varane had a good first game while Benzema remained rusty and missed a few chances.
Italy U21 2-0 Russia U21
Real Madrid Castilla’s Denis Cheryshev started for Russia U21 in their friendly against Italy U21. He played up until half time when he was substituted. The Russians lost 2-0.
Spain 1-1 Finland
Sergio Ramos, started and captained Spain to a disappointing 1-1 draw in Gijon versus Finland. The game was extra special for Ramos as he became the youngest European player, at 26, to play 100 games for the national team. He made the occasion even more momentous for himself by getting a goal. (Video) Ramos has seven goals in non-friendly games for Spain which is a record for a defender. He is also the defender with most goals under Vicente Del Bosque. Ramos became the second player for Spain to score on his 100th game landmark. Earlier Xabi Alonso had scored a brace in his century game against France. It was also a key day for Vicente Del Bosque, former Real Madrid player and manager, to reach 69 games as Spain’s manager eclipsing Kubala.
Alvaro Arbeloa also started and played 90mins for La Roja. Xabi Alonso and Raul Albiol remained unused substitutes.
Argentina 3-0 Venezuela
With Di Maria suspended for Argentina, Higuain was the only Real Madrid player available for selection. He started the game and continued his goal scoring spree against the Venezuelans. Just like against Real Mallorca, he scored two for the Argentines. Both of Higuain’s goals came courtesy Lionel Messi. The first came in the 29th minute (video) and the second in the 59th minute (video).
