Real Madrid have been drawn with Turkish football club Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with the Steve McManaman, former Real Madrid player and representative for Wembley (this year’s UEFA Champions League final venue) showing the teams picked from the draw. The draw was conducted at noon CET at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon.
The first leg takes place on 3 April at Bernabeu with the second leg taking place on 9 April in Turkey at Al Sami Yen.
Speaking about the draw, Aitor Karanka said:
“If a team gets to the quarter finals, they deserve to be there. It would be a mistake for us to think that this is an easy tie. Galatasaray have very experienced players; some have played for us and there are others too like Drogba; it will be a tough tie. But we still have league games to play before the tie. There will be time to focus on that game and weigh up our opponents. Our focus now is on tomorrow’s game because that is our next fixture. The team have hit some form and we are playing genuinely well and we have even managed to pick up results in games where we haven’t been at our best. We are in confident mood, which is important going into the business end of the season, when the Cup final is played and we will be fighting it out in the final stretch of the league season and the Champions League. It is an exciting time and we are working hard.
Emilio Butragueno who was present for the draw said:
We have to get a good result at home because we know the environment that will be in Turkey and the passion of their fans. If Galatasaray has reached this stage it’s because they have overcome many difficulties. They’ve already won against Schalke. It will be a very difficult tie. You have to have maximum concentration and be inspired. They’re a competitive team, also joined by Sneijder and Drogba. We’ll have to be very careful. In the league we are a bit out of our aspirations and the Champions League, which is always a goal, it is a little harder this year.
Real Madrid have played Galatasaray thrice with the Turkish side winning twice and Madrid winning once.
