Chelsea’s Ghanaian defensive midfielder Michael Essien has joined Real Madrid on a one year loan deal announced right at midnight which is also when the transfer window is shut in Spain.

Mourinho was adamant to bring in Essien that he pushed for the club to pay all his wages despite some members of the Real Madrid board opposing it. (source: Gary)

Jose Mourinho was the one who brought Essien to Chelsea from Lyon and he was an integral part of Mourinho’s Chelsea side. He has won two Premier Leagues, four FA Cup’s and one Champions League with Blues.

Mourinho is an ardent fan of Essien and reportedly wanted to sign him when Mourinho took over at Inter Milan as well but that deal didn’t happen. Now Essien is reunited with Mourinho and can help the team aim for the titles.

With Essien’s arrival, Lass’ exit seems imminent with Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala reportedly interested in the Frenchman. The Russian transfer window closes in six days.

While Essien is a wonderful player and in my opinion an upgrade from Lass, he hasn’t been playing regularly for new manager Roberto di Matteo. He had also been injured and received surgery before the start of 2011/12 season which kept him out of action for some months.
