Real Madrid went down to ten men in as early as the 80th second! With Iker Casillas being sent to the stands and the team down to ten men the game looked difficult from there on. But the whole team did very well to run up and down the pitch to not give Espanyol the chance to make most of the man advantage. Marcelo was the only scorer where the game could have had a much bigger margin in our favour.
80 seconds: Casillas sent off for a “professional foul” as he came out of the box but ended up clipping the player. Since he was the last man, he got a straight red card. Quite honestly, it didn’t look like Iker even touched the player to begin with. If at all he did, the way the Espanyol player rolled around the pitch was horrible!
Thereafter, Khedira had two chances in a few minutes. One was a header which went over the bar and then a long range effort which Kamani saved easily. Marcelo took a shot from distance with his right foot which went over the bar. Ronaldo showed his exquisite dribbling skills but his right footed shot took a deflection which went for a corner.
24 minutes: The goal arrived in the 24th minute after an Espanyol defender failed to clear the ball cleanly. It fell to Ozil who passed it to Ronaldo on his left. Ronaldo saw the run of Marcelo down his left and passed it into his path. Marcelo went past a defender and with a very small angle smashed the ball into the back of the net. Kamani tried to prevent it but the ball had too much momentum behind it to be stopped. Espanyol 0-1 Real Madrid
40 minutes: Adebayor was put through on goal and he did well to shrug off the defender but a combination of a slip at the end and taking a tad too many touches prevented him from taking a clean shot on goal. The ball scooped, hit the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.
Half time : Espanyol 0-1 Real Madrid (Marcelo 24′)
Two glorious chances fell to Adebayor in the second half both provided by Ronaldo. In both the situations, Togo international shot straight at the keeper, thereby, denying an extended and a comfortable lead for our side.
Espanyol also had a decent chance to equalise as one of their players found space in our box but luckily enough there was cover up and the shot/pass was not hit cleanly and it went out for a goal kick.
Full time : Espanyol 0-1 Real Madrid (Marcelo 24′)
- The ten man defence and attack did exceptionally well to cover the length of the pitch. Ozil and Ronaldo even came out to help out the defence which was fabulous to see. Further, Ronaldo wasn’t selfish and provided opportunities for Adebayor was also good to see.
- PLEASE GIVE PEPE A NEW CONTRACT!
- Lovely to see Adan get a chance to play nearly full 90 minutes. Even though it came in controversial circumstances but we’ll take it, won’t we?
- Strange to see not Kaka or Benzema starting. Benzema didn’t feature last week because of upcoming internationals but what about this week?
