Carvalho after scoring v Levante

Real Madrid managed a comfortable 2-0 win over Levante in La Liga to close the gap on Barcelona to within two points with the Catalan side playing Athletic Bilbao tonight. Both goals came in the first half through Karim Benzema and Ricardo Carvalho.

Starting XI:

Adán; Sergio Ramos, Ricardo Carvalho, Raul Albiol, Marcelo; Lass Diarra, Sami Khedira; Angel Di María, Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo; Karim Benzema

Substitutes

Jerzy Dudek, Alvaro Arbeloa, Ezequiel Garay, Fernando Gago, Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, Emmanuel Adebayor

An interesting starting lineup by Jose Mourinho to have Kaka starting in place of Mesut Ozil and Alonso on the bench with Lass starting. Ofcourse, both of them would have been rested keeping in mind the Champions League game next week.

Adan was in goal with Iker Casillas suspended after his quick red card in the last game against Espanyol. And in his absence, Sergio Ramos wore the captain’s arm band.

The lineup was the usual of four in defence (Ramos, Carvalho, Albiol and Marcelo), two defencive midfielders (Khedira and Lass), two creative attacking midfielders (Kaka and Di Maria) and two forwards (Ronaldo and Benzema).

Key Moments:

7th minute – Di Maria went past two Levante defenders showing his brilliant dribbling skills in the process. He brought the ball to his right foot and provided a low cross into the box for Karim Benzema to score from. Quick lead!

Real Madrid 1-0 Levante (Benzema 7′)

41st minute – Ronaldo curls in a low free kick into the box which is a shot/cross and Carvalho manages to get his knee to it. “A goal made in Portugal!”

Real Madrid 2-0 Levante (Benzema 7′, Carvalho 41′)

In the second half, Ronaldo had many opportunities to put his name on the sheet as well but one crucial chance where he headed the ball superbly on a Di Maria cross was pushed over the bar acrobatically by Munua in Levante’s goal.

In the 75th minute, Ozil and Adebayor came in for Kaka and Di Maria to have a strong strong attacking line with Ozil, Ronaldo, Benzema and Adebayor all playing at the same time.

The Ozil-Ronaldo combination nearly created a goal for the Portuguese captain but once again he was left frustrated.

FT Real Madrid 2-0 Levante (Benzema 7′, Carvalho 41′)

Conclusions

  • Adan had a very comfortable game and wasn’t tested AT ALL! Mixture of Levante’s lack of attacking ability and our solid defence to be thanked for that.
  • With one goal up and in a comfortable position, Ronaldo needs to relax and not get agitated with other players. Agree it shows his hunger but let’s not get ourselves in trouble when its not needed?
  • With this win, Jose Mourinho has gone nine years without losing at home. His last defeat came for Porto versus Beira Mar on February 23,2002. This winning run pans Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Real Madrid.WOW!
  • With the win we’re now two points from Barcelona who have had a draw in the league and a loss in the Champions League in their previous two games. Can Bilbao do us a favour at Nou Camp?
