Karim Benzema proved to be the difference at Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in Sevilla after the first leg of the semi finals in the Copa Del Rey. The Frenchman’s first half goal was the only goal of the game as we take a very crucial away goal into the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu. There was another huge miss where we could have easily doubled the lead and Sevilla also could have equalised things or won the game if they had taken their chances.
Key moments in the game
17 minutes – After robbing a Sevilla player on the half line, Real Madrid players progressed forward with one touch passing. Ozil played through to Benzema with the Frenchman having much to do. He however did something totally exceptional as he he dribbled past two Sevilla defenders and slotted his left footed shot past Palop to find the back of the net. A truly glorious goal. He also went on to celebrate with Mourinho which suggests all is well between the two despite whatever the media suggests.
45 minutes + – At the stroke of half time, Ronaldo played a stray ball into the Sevilla half in the hope of finding a team mate but there was no one in support. Sevilla built possession and edged near the Real Madrid box. Kanoute’s left footed pass for Luis Fabiano saw the Brazilian in space past the defence. He did well to go around an outstretched Casillas and shot towards the goal. His shot was cleared off the line by Albiol (I think it was cleared!) with Sevilla players protesting to the assistant referee that the goal should have stood. I have seen both video replays and images of it. Video says it wasn’t a goal, image says it was. Confused!
At half time it was, Sevilla 0-1 Real Madrid.
Second half didn’t produce as many chances or exciting football as the first half did.
79 minutes – One glorious goal scoring opportunity came our way in the 79th minute with Ronaldo nearly past all players but the ball stayed behind him as he moved forward. Ozil was behind to make the most of it but he was probably over confident that it was an easy opportunity that he didn’t put it in as comfortably as he usually does. His shot was saved by Alexis with a lunging tackle.
This is how it stayed up until the end of the match.
At full time it was Sevilla 0-1 Real Madrid.
Unfortunately after the final whistle was blown, a plastic water bottle was thrown from the crowd towards Iker Casillas which hit him in the back of the head. Our captain stayed down clutching the back of his head for some time but got up and marched off the pitch. An awful thing to do wherever it is and whoever it is. Not classy at all.
- A strange lineup by Mourinho to begin with. Having Lass, Alonso and Khedira all part of the starting lineup would have been hard to manage and defensive as well. As it turned out, it wasn’t all that difficult. Except Lass’ ridiculous fouls in the starting stages of the first half, all three played well with each other.
- Ozil and Ronaldo in a free role to roam around really proved to be beneficial. They made the most of their pace and passing ability to provide for each other and Benzema.
- Benzema with his solo effort indicates his ability and Adebayor might have to take the bench for now. Hopefully.
- Finally, am still unsure if Sevilla’s goal should have stood or not. What do you all think?
