With Mesut Ozil joining Real Madrid for a reported fee of 15 million euros, Jorge Valdano called this the end of our transfers inwards before the season begins. Thus far we have added Ricardo Carvalho, Sergio Canales, Sami Khedira, Pedro Leon, Angel di Maria and sixth being Ozil from Werder Bremen. I do not want to question or debate the sense behind the signing but let’s analyse what our squad looks like right now :
Goalkeepers : Casillas, Dudek and Adan
Defenders : Pepe, Ramos, Albiol, Arbeloa, Carvalho, Marcelo, Garay.
Midfielders : Drenthe, Diarra, Gago, Lass, Alonso, Khedira, Kaka, Granero, Pedro Leon, Van der Vaart, Canales, Di Maria,Ozil
Forwards : Ronaldo, Higuain, Benzema.
(Please try and ignore for some time that Marcelo is a defender and Drenthe is a midfielder! :p)
That’s a total of 26 players and 13 midfielders alone!
Valdano told Marca :
We have 26 players right now, so we need to lighten the squad and it will happen in the coming days. This position does not affect the Spanish players currently on our books.
I see only midfielders being offloaded to lighten the squad and to bring in money. So I see two players at least or a maximum of three being transferred out of the Bernabeu in the remaining 11 days of the transfer market. Possible candidates?
- Diarra – Diarra has been an important player for Real Madrid ever since he joined in 2002. He has been a great player for the team and has stuck around with us through thick and thin. He continued to play for us despite losing out his first team place on various occasions and also when he endured an injury which kept him out for long. But its time now that his older legs(relatively) be replaced by younger ones so we can compete for trophies with a renewed belief.
- Drenthe – Am sorry but I have no good words to speak of for Drenthe. He has been given chances to prove himself and he has failed time and again. He received chances to prove himself in front of new coach (Mourinho) with pre-season action but nothing pivotal was done by the Dutchman. He has the speed to torment defences but his crossing ability and lack of composure leads to his downfall. I would certainly hope we offload him. (or some clubs are interested!)
These are my two safe bets of making their way out of the club. If the club does sell three then my next guess would be Gago. I would hope Van der Vaart or Lass aren’t offloaded despite both drawing most attention from clubs in England. Van der Vaart has been linked with Liverpool for a reported fee of 8 million pounds and Lass being linked with Manchester United.
Who do you think will be offloaded?
